The Year in Summary - Comments from the Executive Director

2010 presented Sycamore with many challenges; the slowed economy and loss of local small businesses that are a good source of job opportunities for persons with disabilities.  Changes in State and Federal funding slowed reimbursement and decreased service rates, which generated hours of financial analysis to assure we could continue to provide quality services to individuals with disabilities. Through it all, the employees of Sycamore Services continued to keep our mission in mind and set new records for the number of children and adults served.  Therefore, positive outcomes were achieved.  Goals were met and accomplishments were numerous despite the economy and rate changes.

Meeting after meeting throughout the year rehabilitation professionals, families, advocates and consumers stood side-by-side and others stood toe-to-toe with State Administrators to keep our combined purpose in the light while they developed legislation, redefined services, set new policies and made decisions that would impact services and programs throughout the State of Indiana.  We were sometimes successful and sometimes not.  I was frequently disappointed by the lack of progress and an inability to answer questions being asked of me.  When I began to wonder if all these meetings had any value, I would have a day with no meetings and arrive at my office to remember exactly why all the time, travel and discussion are absolutely necessary.

Reinforcement came from those we serve and their families.  They make it easy to take up their cause.  Our mission has not waivered, nor our commitment.  As 2010 unfolded, the challenges were greater, consumer needs increased, and regulation escalated.  All of which caused concern, but none was insurmountable.  The accomplishments of '09 lay behind us and the challenges of '11 lay ahead.  I look forward to them, for there is but one way to go, onward and upward.

We will continue to provide input to State Administrators and rest assure, that Sycamore will continue to provide caring, personalized services that promote independence of those we serve and improve the quality of all our lives.
