Meet Josh

Direct Support ProfessionalJosh
“I have worked at Sycamore Services since I was 18 years old.  I have had so much fun; the past years have flown by!  I work with some really amazing people with disabilities, assisting  them with self-sufficiency in the community and  in their homes.  I have fun everyday.  How many people can say that and mean it?  The training and work experience is awesome.  I have learned things that I will use for the rest of my life, like how to teach people, the importance of diversity and how to work independently. With the benefit of tuition assistance I was able to complete my degreee.  I now work full time as an Air Traffic Controller as well as work part-time with Sycamore clients.  “Fun, flexibility, good wages and a great work environment!  What more could I ask for?”

Meet Lorraine

Lorraine

Direct Support Professional                                                                               After many years of service with Sycamore Services, Lorraine Ott retired for the second time at the end of December 2006.  On August 27th she missed Sycamore so much she came back.  Starting with what was then Opportunity Cottage in 1973, Lorraine has been an important part of the lives of many of the participants of Sycamore as they have grown from children to adults.  “I’ve seen some of them grow up. We have had good times and I truly love them all” said Lorraine.

Lorraine started her career at Opportunity Cottage when her children were young and her husband used a wheelchair from an accident.  The schedule worked well for her and her family.  She feels that the one thing that she has learned and passed on to her children is “to be compassionate.”  Her experience with Sycamore as well as her late husband’s disability caused her to teach her sons, now adults to always think of others.

Quilting and genealogy are two hobbies that she likes to spend her free time on.  Lorraine works part-time as a Floor Supervisor for Sycamore.

Meet Linda

Direct Support Professional                                                                                                                                    “Sure, I’m ‘retired’ - from corporate America.  I retired at age 50, but I still wanted a challenge.  I was able to pursue this opportunity at Sycamore Services.  I always wanted to be a teacher and now I am.  As a part-time Direct Support Professional, I teach daily living skills to adults with disabilities.  We work on reading, problem solving, and community skills.  I really enjoy my work because I know I am making a difference in the lives of the individuals with whom I work.  The part-time hours are great because I still have plenty of quality time to spoil my grandchildren and travel.  Speaking of time off, I actually get paid time off.  That’s right, I work a part-time schedule that is convenient for me and my family and they pay me for my time off!  After a year, I even had the opportunity to enroll in the 401(k) plan and Sycamore Services contributed to it.”

Meet Tina

Direct Support Professional                                                                                                                                    At Sycamore Services, Inc., I get PAID to have fun in the community with great people!  Don’t get me wrong, I work hard.  This position is challenging.  Communication, creativity and teaching skills are required.  I assist individuals in the community  supporting them in things like taking classes and volunteering at the zoo or a museum.  With some folks, I help with developing skills in the home, like cooking.  Occasionally, we just have fun and go bowling or to the movies.  And that’s all in a day’s work.  It is a great feeling to know that my efforts are helping others and my community at the same time!  I look forward to going to work everyday.  I get to use my active personality in a productive way!  In addition to working with great people, it is a supportive environment.  My hard work and dedication are recognized by my supervisor.  Some of the other perks to working at Sycamore Services are the schedule flexibility and not being stuck behind a desk everyday for 8 hours!  Not to mention, as a newlywed I am looking forward to the 401(k) benefits for my future!”
