Awesome Westside Advocates
Karen Rose is a Community Consultant plus she plays a leader’s role in the Awesome Westside Advocates. This group of consumers receives training and support from Karen as they learn to advocate for themselves. Over the past two years she has assisted them in becoming members of State and National groups to support and promote services for persons with developmental disabilities. Many of them are members of Sycamore Services-Hendricks County Arc to have a voice at a local level. The group is currently looking at ways to earn funds that will support their attendance to the Indiana Governor’s Planning Council Conference in December.
Karen helps AWA Members find scholarships that will support registration fees and she also finds sponsors to provide the group with other amenities. Recently, Roadrunner’s Affordable Cars in Lizton partnered with Sycamore to purchase and print AWA t-shirts. The group will be cleaning the Roadrunner lot on October 26 to show their gratitude for the contribution the owners made to the group.
Good job Karen!
UPWARD ABILITY WALKING CLUB
Kim McKay has served Sycamore in many ways over her years with the agency, but her most recent and ongoing role is as leader of Upward Ability Walking Club, a consumer walking group. Kim is one of Sycamore’s Behavior Specialists who worked with children in her early years then worked as an Employment Consultant for several years before moving to the behavioral filed.
Kim has assisted the group in participating in a variety of walks for different occasions and they meet on a regular basis. They walked in the “Great Strides for Cystic Fibrosis” event that was held in Plainfield in May. They also walked for the “Relay for Life” at the Hendricks Co. Fairgrounds in June. Many of them participated in Special Olympics, too.
Kim understands that activities such as walking are good for physical and emotional health and she supports all those who are members of this group.
Good job Kim!
